The currant tree is a multi-stem shrub or small tree that usually reaches a height of 6-10 meters. It has an upright, often spreading growth habit. The bark is smooth and grey-brown in colour. The leaves are oval to lanceolate and finely toothed. They are green in colour and turn yellow, orange or red in the fall before falling off.
In spring, the currant tree produces abundant white flowers in loose bunches. These flowers attract pollinating insects. After flowering, small berries, often called currants, develop which are initially red and later ripen to a dark purple to black colour. These fruits are edible and have a sweet, slightly sour taste.
Amelanchier lamarckii grows well in a variety of soil types but prefers well-drained soil. It thrives in both full sun and light shade. This tree generally requires little maintenance and is relatively hardy. It is often used in landscape design and garden architecture because of its graceful elements.
