A medium to large tree that can grow up several meters high. The tree has dense, glossy green leaves that are elliptical in shape and about 5-12 centimetres long.  The leaves of bay laurel are leathery and fragrant. They are often used in cooking for their aromatic properties and are added to stews, soups and sauces.

Laurel produces small yellow-green flowers that grow in clusters. The flowers are not very striking. After pollination, small berries develop that are poisonous to humans. Laurel is often planted as an ornamental tree because of its attractive appearance and fragrant leaves.
